Music and beyond

I seriously believe, there is some mysticism about songs. How much ever deep and pronounced a prose may be, its effect could be life altering in some cases, they rarely trigger the kind of spontaneous reaction, associated with poetry/songs/music/lyrics. I couldn’t quite tag them as a single entity for each are interlinked. A poetry without any tune is good, but once it is set into a tune, it becomes immortal. It is not just the coinage of words and the instrumentation, the mindset when you listen plays a tremendous role in this process, of preserving the nostalgia and reigniting newer emotions as well.

Stumbled on Uyire song from the movie and despite listening to it for several times, somehow the below lines landed on mind for the first time yesterday.

கல்லொன்று தடைசெய்த போதும்
புல்லொன்று புதுவேர்கள் போடும்
நம் காதல் அது போல மீறும்

The meaning being, //despite the stubbornness of the stone, the grass roots still persevere and proceed, like our love//. In just three lines, the entire storyline of the movie and its related events rushed through my mind. I remember my friend’s comment after watching the movie first day in theater. He didn’t like the sad ending and predicted its failure correctly. Despite not knowing a word of hindi, he went to the movie to see SRK, who was having quite a fan following and for ARR’s songs. The movie became a staple diet for DD to be played in Aug 15th and Jan 26th, finally giving some breathing space to the “Roja” movie tape. Manisha Koirala was looking as sharp as she ever was and the tinge of sadness in her eyes throughout the movie set the tone for the eventual ending. Guess it was Aravind swamy who had dubbed for SRK in tamil version.

My mind was racing and suddenly I realized the song had stopped and the next one had begun. I paused the play for a moment and was wondering over the power that music has over our minds. Possibly, sometime down the line, they may find out a link between music and storing data, relationally. If a couple of lines can trigger this much gamut of nostalgia and memories, which till that time I wasn’t even aware that I remembered, imagine if the same can be leveraged to link and search data. I am quite confident that in the near future there would be tech to download our memories and possibly thoughts as well into some hard drive. In fact, as the sci-fi novels often quote, immortality for humans wouldn’t be through drinking from some fountain of youth, but via their online avatar only, is my strong belief. This could be the next gen search option possibly leading to replacement of Google. With infinite storage capacity of the human mind, coupled with an option to “trigger search” for details, the utilization of mind can be leveraged to the extent possible. Every walking talking person could be a live database and memory loss would be a thing of the past. For janthu’s like me, it could be a boon in disguise for I never can forget which dress was bought when and for what occasion!!! Avan avan prachanai avanuku!!

I hope I am long gone before the scenario you have outlined in the last para of your post becomes a reality. I know its likely to happan, but I want no part of it.

You see, if it happens, there will be no more mystery in music. No more wandering of the mind which you have nicely introduced and triggered this post.

And it certainly wont help you "remember" what dress you bought for what occasion. Either it will give a search error, ot it will suggest 24,000 answers which will land you in even hotter water !
