Start Trek

Had been binge watching on Star Trek since last couple of weeks. Whenever I used to see the alert popping up on my watchlist, somehow felt it would be another boring sci-fi one. Ever since I started with the first one, it has been absolute binge. Saw all the 3 movies back to back and now onto Star trek Original series on Netflix. I was surprised to recall this series, that used to play on DD long back. That phasers (guns that shoot lasers) made me realize that they used to be my favorite gun as a kid and how we used to make paper guns and fight our own battles. That part of my childhood memory had long been lost and the other one being the transmitters. The way they get transported to and from their ship was fascinating and I used to long for such options to try it out. I never had a chance to see those series frequently and whenever I did, I used to get glued to the screen with no clue as to what they were speaking. And I used to think Spock was the villain all along for he used to look very different with his sharp ears, funny hairstyle and weird eyebrows. Now that I had a chance to watch them all, rather than starting from New generation series, wanted to go all the way back from the original series.

Quite surprising fact about the whole series is that, the setting and the thought process behind it. Star Trek – Original series, was broadcasted first about 50 years back. Many of the tools they use for communication, health reading equipment, the weapons, were all so ahead of their time that, must’ve sounded fantastic at that time. I believe, the flip model mobile phones were designed based on this series and to imagine such a concept several decades ahead of their times was nothing short of amazing. Same goes for their meeting tables with ports for connecting to videos and projector for showcasing presentations. What is common place now would’ve all been fascinating as an idea at that point of time. The setting that they use and the make up for the aliens are all quite simple and nothing fancy about them. As a story line, if you replace the alien and space setting with any regular ship or plane on a sparsely populated island or desert, the setup will still make sense. It is minimalistic in nature in that regard. You don’t have to learn PhD level physics or a science grad to understand their dialogues. Yet the feel of watching a science fiction is never lost on you. The cast and crew hardly have 3 sets of dresses all throughout and one setting for major part of the running episode, yet it never feels bored. Though on scale and size, the 3 movies were several times bigger than the drama series, the storylines for each episode, more than makes up for them. Planning to move on to New generation series once this is over, for that is rated equally better by other viewers. To misquote the series tag line, boldly venturing to see those episodes that many has already seen.

Oh yes, the cult series that has been one of the icons of entertainment for a long time, especially to nerds !

Yes, 50 years old, which in the first three years , made losses. Trivia - this was started by Desilu, the production company started by Lucille ball of I love Lucy fame.

Somehow never developed an interest in this and haven't watched it seriously.

Ode to the Nice Guys

This is a tribute to the nice guys. The nice guys that finish last, that never become more than friends, that endure hours of whining and bitching about what assholes guys are, while disproving the very point. This is dedicated to those guys who always provide a shoulder to lean on but restrain themselves to tentative hugs, those guys who hold open doors and give reassuring pats on the back and sit patiently outside the changing room at department stores. This is in honor of the guys that obligingly reiterate how cute/beautiful/smart/funny/sexy their female friends are at the appropriate moment, because they know most girls need that litany of support. This is in honor of the guys with open minds, with laid-back attitudes, with honest concern. This is in honor of the guys who respect a girl's every facet, from her privacy to her theology to her clothing style. This is for the guys who escort their drunk, bewildered female friends back from parties and never take advantage once they...

Few authors thrill us to read more of their creations. At times its sheer luck that we might end up with the worse of their lot and might give up on them only to find many other good ones which we would've ignored based on first impression. James Rollins is one such author. My friend's sister introduced me to "Map of Bones" and told me that its in the same genre of "Davinci Code" and since i am a sucker for adventure series she recommended this one to me, with a warning that, at times this guy goes over the board like Ludlum in describing situations. With that warning in mind i began the book. I took my own sweet time to finish it but the book kept me interested. However many times i kept it down i always went for it again to know what happened next. In the end, i pretty much liked the story, though it was totally unbelievable. The story is about the bones of the Three wise men or Magi who visited Jesus when he was a kid. Their bones held a clue to a vast so...

Hearbeat - season 2 - review

What makes a drama series tick, in OTT, that too in Tamil? The question should've been pretty straight forward and not as difficult as it is for making a successful movie, for drama series are dime a dozen across scores of TV channels and none of them are found wanting for audience. The more the cry the merrier the TRP. In that context, the only challenge that OTT platforms might've had while streaming tamil series must've been to choose the path - either the well trodden and worn out cryathons aligning with Satellite channels or try for something genre specific like how they do across English and other foreign languages. This is where Heartbeat series in Hotstar finds the fine balance between being a soap oppaari (no pun intended) in tv and carving a niche OTT audience.  While the setup might've been familiar one for Hindi audience with so many series happening on hospital based storyline, i guess this is a first for tamil. The first season was more on establishing the...
