Great day for sports

Off late, there are multiple memorable events that happen across the sporting fraternity. Interestingly the frequency of such astounding feats seems to have increased all of a sudden. Last week saw the rise of P.V Sindhu and her vikramaadithya attempt to vanquish the vedhalam tag of “forever the friend of bride” coming up trumps. In fact, considering that she has made it to the world championship finals, 4 times previously should’ve made her a hot favorite. But like CSK of IPL whose name is prewritten on the final 4 list even before the itinerary is written, that Sindhu would make it to a shuttle final was a given. But whether she would ever be able come back with the silverware that would be gold, was under much debate, for she had this stumble at the final lap happening across several tourneys now. All those have been to set to rest and 5th time proved lucky. The phenomenal achievement can only be realized when one compares her feat with her illustrious Indian peers. NO ONE else, even has a single final appearance to show!!!! That includes several biggies like Nehwal, Gopi and even the great Prakash. Truly living up to the name of “Thanga magal”.
If at all there are teams that I hate to watch, they would be England and Aussies. Between them, the best result for me would be a dull and drab draw for I could support either of them to win, even if played within themselves. My prejudice for Aussies stems from their age old arrogance and English, for some reason, I could never even consider as a team for a really long time. Till the Irish man took over the reins and made them who they are now. But this 3rd match of the present Ashes series, would’ve made millionaires out of anyone who would’ve betted on an English win. Such was the ease with which they were swatted out of contention in their first innings that, it was set on stone that the Urn would be making its trip down under. Despite Archer’s bodyline inspired “head hunting” efforts, English still had a mountain to climb in 4th innings and 350+ chase where never heard of before. With the last wicket pair left to score 80 runs and having a day and half to hunt them down, probably, the Aussies let their guards down a bit. Usually, you stoke the fire to get ashes. Here Stokes was on fire and ensured, England still had a fighting chance to win the Ashes!! Such belligerence is rarely witnessed on test arena. He single handedly scored almost 99% of the runs required with the last wicket pair and ensured his century as well in the process. This man, off late, has become the go-to person for team England, be it on ODI’s and now on Test matches as well. He is probably the best all-rounder in the world at the moment, right on track to emulate Kallis. Since he is literally two players rolled in one, any team would give their arm and leg to have him on their rolls. Archer probably would start bringing out the fear of getting really hurt on batsmen mind. If he can fell Smith, the greatest fighter test batsman of this era, he can knock out anyone. With grudging acknowledgement, credit having must been given where it is due, Aussies have amazing reserves of mental strength and their biggest plus is their collective belief system. Anyone who comes in new, seems to adapt to this culture of celebrating everyone elses achievement and when the chips are down, you can surely count on any playing eleven of the Aussies to resist. No team, ever, in my cricket watching memory, comes close to this “collectively they win” attitude and group of individuals with amazing mental strength. Proteas, despite their suggestive name, are nowhere near the aussie league. One team, that I can vouch for, as a close second would be the kiwis. Must be, something to do with the waters of the continent down under.

If you do a sports post, you have to suffer a long comment from me !!

Yes, a great achievement from Sindhu. Her moment was really in the quarterfinals against Tai Tzu Ying. Tai has been almost unbeatable over the last 2 years. In a pulsating match Sindhu won 12-21, 23-21, 21-19. Extremely close. Once that happened, there was no stopping her. Two years back she lost one of the greatest matches of all time to Okuhara in the finals. This time it was sweet revenge.

The Ashes test was a fluke victory. Stokes played an innings of a lifetime. I predict Australia will be back to the winning ways next test. It sure was an incredible test match. This is why Test matches for me, are better than other forms of cricket.

All tight. I will shut up now :)

Heheheee.. Now I know the trigger. I saw highlights of her match last year with okuhara. Pulse eguruthu for each rally and smash. Sindhu is the crown jewel of Indian sports

I have rarely come across a sports post on your blog. Since i am not a great fan of the second part of the sport review that you are talking about, let me just stick with Sindhu.

That gal made us all proud. and what a win!!! Ramesh's comments are as always throws light on a different perspectives

Timeline by Micheal crichton

Michael Crichton along with Arthur Hailey is my favorite author. It gives immense thrill to read their books and their storylines are full of insights on the industry or genre or the institution about which the premise may be based, almost like reading a subject matter book but interestingly written in simple language which can be followed by laymen. I remember reading this book sometime around my college first year or may be bit earlier around that time. It was obviously a hard copy and was shared with me by a school mate of mine, who was also the one who introduced me to Asimov. He gave me "Prelude to Foundation" that i read for almost an year. "Timeline" was intriguing and kept me interested sheerly by its concept of time travel and i was smitten by the thought process when i read it first. This time, co-incidentally, i was also watching the movie based on the same story in parallel and somehow both the book and the adaptation were disappointing! I can understand...

Sambhavam : Adhyaayam onnu - movie review

Kudos to Malluwood for having owned the sci-fi and other fantasy genres from Hollywood. They've managed to create hits on the most difficult genres to succeed in India. Be it Minnal Murali or Lokah chapter 1 and several other horror/thriller genres as well, Malayalam story writers have aced the art of coming up with mind boggling scripts rivalling their Hollywood counterparts. Even for those that are lift offs from Japanese Korean movies, when the same is available for every other director, the best work comes from their industry and credit should be given where its due. I am not sure if this movie is an inspiration from any other European/Asian or American version, but the presentation, picturisation everything keeps you spell bound and is quite engaging as well. Storywise, it is about time loop concept, possibly the most interesting yet potentially confusing of plot lines. A police officer gets transferred from city to a remote village. He sees an accident on his way to the stati...

Rookie - web series review

Despite this coming up on the "Next to watch" timeline, i kept skipping it for no reason. When i felt really bored last week, started watching it and after a slight binge watch, i am into season 4 in no time!!! Not that it is that interesting or racy for that matter. But there is something earthy and grounded about the whole premise which keeps you entertained!! The story is about a real time oldie who joins the LAPD as a Rookie cop, having only a decade or so for his retirement. How he comes up in grade and his team's exploits form the storyline so far. The way they've set the storyline, it makes Los Angeles seems to be the bed rock of criminals and illegal activity!! Every episode has at least one gun fight or a drug bust or a kidnapping or murder!! Of course, with the premise being based on police activities, you can't show anything else. It is like having a drama series on doctors and complaining that all episodes deals with diseases and death!! I agree! But c...
