Of Population and politicians

Sani pradosham is quite famous of all the regular pradoshams in shivan temples. Even during regular times, the number of people who turn up for this happens to be much more than the usual ones that fall on other days of the week. With Social media, whenever there is a random post claiming that particular one happens to be ultra special for some reason best known to Whatsapp university, you can easily make out its impact by the turn outs. The last one i attended, apparently was on such a timing it seems, for the entire stretch around the temple, all the 4 maada streets, where jam packed. Literally you've to walk over vehicles if you had to cross the road for there were hardly any space for pedestrians. And once inside the temple, it was even heavier with literal standing space being luxury. Engenthu thaan ivlo per thideernu varuvaangalo!! Many a times i've loathed in this very space the crowds that turn up at every nook andd corner worth visiting. Any hill station or water body or trekking space or any place worth going is no longer worth it, for there would be at least a thousand other folk who would've thought of the exact same plan. In this backdrop the comments made by some of our politicians ring an alarming bell!!!

Recently the CM of Andhra had mentioned that people should shun the "We two ours one" slogan when it comes to planning their family and should go for as many children as they can produce, for reasons best known to him!! With declining birth rate across several countries around the globe, this has been the thought process across many nations including China i believe, where they are pushing for more babies literally!! Even with all the declining growth rates, we are hitting 8 billion and counting. With these kind of hare brained aggressive measures by governments, whose very efforts in containing the population had hardly earned any results, wonder ten billion target will possibly be achieved by end of this decade itself. On one hand doomsayers predict fall of regimes and economies where people stay alive (literally) for long, for an economy to thrive it needs youth. On other hand the same economists blame country like India, which, despite its thriving youth population, at least for next few decades, doesn't have quality employable workforce. The rate at which the conversations happen back and forth, pretty soon they would be rooting for "specially made" populace, who will strive for one particular reason. Makes one wonder, how different such a scenario would be against the much riled setup of the ancients as mentioned by Thiruvalluvar that its not by birth, but basis the nature of work humans are stratagized. The condition is India is one of the weirdest in the world where every community harps on being labelled as backward to enjoy the benefits that comes with that title. With more and more politicians urging people to increase the birth rate, wouldn't that mean majoritarianism is what they are proposing (imposing rather) for people?!! Enna karumamo..irukara populationukkay edam illa..inium ethikittay pona...enga thaan porathu!!

Oh, there is very little that any politician can do to influence birth rates. Education, social upliftment of women, economic consequences of children and ubiquitous family planning options have ensure that we will never have increasing birth rates. Countries like Singapore and South Korea have actually tried financial incentives to have babies, but with zero success. Indian population growth rates have fallen dramatically and after a decade or two will startd reclining. No amount of hot air from worthies will change this. In fact the long term problem for humanity is decline and not growth. There will come a day when there will only be a handful of devotees in Kapaleeswarar temple and there would be ample parking space in the Mada streets.

By the way, why are you attemtping to alleviate Sani Pradosham ? No deity is going to do anything but good for Gilsu !

Ode to the Nice Guys

This is a tribute to the nice guys. The nice guys that finish last, that never become more than friends, that endure hours of whining and bitching about what assholes guys are, while disproving the very point. This is dedicated to those guys who always provide a shoulder to lean on but restrain themselves to tentative hugs, those guys who hold open doors and give reassuring pats on the back and sit patiently outside the changing room at department stores. This is in honor of the guys that obligingly reiterate how cute/beautiful/smart/funny/sexy their female friends are at the appropriate moment, because they know most girls need that litany of support. This is in honor of the guys with open minds, with laid-back attitudes, with honest concern. This is in honor of the guys who respect a girl's every facet, from her privacy to her theology to her clothing style. This is for the guys who escort their drunk, bewildered female friends back from parties and never take advantage once they...

Padithathil pidithathu

Few authors thrill us to read more of their creations. At times its sheer luck that we might end up with the worse of their lot and might give up on them only to find many other good ones which we would've ignored based on first impression. James Rollins is one such author. My friend's sister introduced me to "Map of Bones" and told me that its in the same genre of "Davinci Code" and since i am a sucker for adventure series she recommended this one to me, with a warning that, at times this guy goes over the board like Ludlum in describing situations. With that warning in mind i began the book. I took my own sweet time to finish it but the book kept me interested. However many times i kept it down i always went for it again to know what happened next. In the end, i pretty much liked the story, though it was totally unbelievable. The story is about the bones of the Three wise men or Magi who visited Jesus when he was a kid. Their bones held a clue to a vast so...

Hearbeat - season 2 - review

What makes a drama series tick, in OTT, that too in Tamil? The question should've been pretty straight forward and not as difficult as it is for making a successful movie, for drama series are dime a dozen across scores of TV channels and none of them are found wanting for audience. The more the cry the merrier the TRP. In that context, the only challenge that OTT platforms might've had while streaming tamil series must've been to choose the path - either the well trodden and worn out cryathons aligning with Satellite channels or try for something genre specific like how they do across English and other foreign languages. This is where Heartbeat series in Hotstar finds the fine balance between being a soap oppaari (no pun intended) in tv and carving a niche OTT audience.  While the setup might've been familiar one for Hindi audience with so many series happening on hospital based storyline, i guess this is a first for tamil. The first season was more on establishing the...
