OMITB vs TMC

The title is kept as such to to kelari vittufy the curiosity in Thalai..hehehe.

OMITB is Only Murders in the building, a famous drama series which is into its 5th season, currently playing in Jio Hotstar and TMC is Thursday murder club a movie in Netflix. Renduthukum enna common? Well, both deal with elderly lead characters trying to solve murders. Selena Gomez elderly listla sertha paavam. But that crew involves Steve Martin and Chris short who are not exactly teenagers. The reason for this post being, i happened to see Thursday Murder club the movie on Netflix and couldn't help but wonder how such a stellar cast had been put to waste as compared to sterling attempt by the drama series crew!!

The other reason why i was drawn to the movie being, it was a novel by Richard Osman, which came in a book recommendation list. I tried reading the novel and gave up midway as it was neither too thrilling for a murder mystery nor was it funny. But when i saw the movie cast involving the best James Bond ever Pierce Brosnan, Mahatma Gandhi pugazh Ben kingsley (oct 2nd anniki ipdi oru statement!! Godse ku kooda adukkathu!!) and above all the lady who didn't just acted as the "Queen" but looks every bit as regal - Helen Mirren. You wouldn't even have to guess the kind of characters she might've portrayed on screen across her career, for one look at her, you know she is of a different mold!!! The way she carries herself as a character and as a performer is amazing!!! But not even such a stellar casting could save the otherwise bland movie!! It falls miserably short in both the thrills department as well as the humor, but can't blame them. Sattila iruntha thaan agappaila varum. When the original book itself was bland wonder how they chose it to make it as a movie!! Oru vela en taste thaan mokkaiya irukko enamo. But i neither liked the book much and not the movie. But the crew keeps the story engaging with their performances and you cannot take your eyes away from their performances. Ben kingsley is slightly under cooked as a character and the rebel union leader role somehow doesn't fit the guy who played ultimate capitalist weapon and how had the license to kill.

As a comparison attempt, the second episode of current season in OMITB, stands heads and shoulders in comparison. It weaves the story of the doorman across all the seasons, linking the characters and imbibing them organically into both their stories as well as the events in the building. It was perfect in every sense. But again, they have a strong base, literally, for it is a multi storied building and with Steve Martin at helm, the humour is not just infectious but at perfect level alongside the whodunnit portions. I didn't like much the previous season, but again, this one is more than making up for it, so far!! Those who enjoy a quirky murder mystery with a dose of humour will relish it for sure.

Very successful in kelari vittufying, I can confirm, so much so that it took my three days to put my comment in :)

I am not going to comment on the intricacies of the OMITB/TMC comparison. But I am going to thalai kuttify you vigorously for daring to say that Pierce Brosnan is the best James Bond ever. Sacrilege. Maha kodumai.

It will always be Sean Connery :)

Ode to the Nice Guys

This is a tribute to the nice guys. The nice guys that finish last, that never become more than friends, that endure hours of whining and bitching about what assholes guys are, while disproving the very point. This is dedicated to those guys who always provide a shoulder to lean on but restrain themselves to tentative hugs, those guys who hold open doors and give reassuring pats on the back and sit patiently outside the changing room at department stores. This is in honor of the guys that obligingly reiterate how cute/beautiful/smart/funny/sexy their female friends are at the appropriate moment, because they know most girls need that litany of support. This is in honor of the guys with open minds, with laid-back attitudes, with honest concern. This is in honor of the guys who respect a girl's every facet, from her privacy to her theology to her clothing style. This is for the guys who escort their drunk, bewildered female friends back from parties and never take advantage once they...

Padithathil pidithathu

Few authors thrill us to read more of their creations. At times its sheer luck that we might end up with the worse of their lot and might give up on them only to find many other good ones which we would've ignored based on first impression. James Rollins is one such author. My friend's sister introduced me to "Map of Bones" and told me that its in the same genre of "Davinci Code" and since i am a sucker for adventure series she recommended this one to me, with a warning that, at times this guy goes over the board like Ludlum in describing situations. With that warning in mind i began the book. I took my own sweet time to finish it but the book kept me interested. However many times i kept it down i always went for it again to know what happened next. In the end, i pretty much liked the story, though it was totally unbelievable. The story is about the bones of the Three wise men or Magi who visited Jesus when he was a kid. Their bones held a clue to a vast so...

Hearbeat - season 2 - review

What makes a drama series tick, in OTT, that too in Tamil? The question should've been pretty straight forward and not as difficult as it is for making a successful movie, for drama series are dime a dozen across scores of TV channels and none of them are found wanting for audience. The more the cry the merrier the TRP. In that context, the only challenge that OTT platforms might've had while streaming tamil series must've been to choose the path - either the well trodden and worn out cryathons aligning with Satellite channels or try for something genre specific like how they do across English and other foreign languages. This is where Heartbeat series in Hotstar finds the fine balance between being a soap oppaari (no pun intended) in tv and carving a niche OTT audience.  While the setup might've been familiar one for Hindi audience with so many series happening on hospital based storyline, i guess this is a first for tamil. The first season was more on establishing the...
