Of heroes and villains

I often used to wonder, all those super spies, how do they manage their daily routines, especially in midst of a major action. Sometimes, they are shown to go without sleep for several hours and there are rarely any note about their food habits. But they will be shown as connoisseurs of drinks and have in depth knowledge of several types of cuisines that they will proudly display to impress the villain or his spouse (especially James Bond) many of whose scenes and situations would be depicted around the dining table. While hero would be actively in pursuit, the villain would be shown as sitting and pondering or lashing at this cronies for having either lost to the hero or secretly planning his next action from dining table. Except for James Bond who made the shaken but not stirred Martini, there are hardly any other famous hero character who are known for their taste in any other routine like normal human beings. One reason that i felt was, rather than depicting how they get up, brush their teeth, how many times they pooped or what they had for their breakfast, the readers would only be interested in action, right. Fair point. But why the same is not for the villains begs a question!! Most of the villains would be shown as pompous, luxurious, drinking heavily or smoking or gambling. If they are continuously in this mode, they wouldn't even be fit for being their own adiyaal is common knowledge. The origins of villains will always be tough and majority of the readers would actually empathize with them. In fact, most of the movies that are action block busters of current day would be considered sacrilege a few decades back when good people triumphed on screen and even bad people, either they get reformed or arrested or will die despite the hero trying to save them after offering their final apology. All the gore that is shown as heroic were shown in a milder manner but as qualities of villains!! But again, the tastes change always and this will change as well in coming years. But the fact that, the hero can go for long hours without sleep or anything to eat or drink and still be alert enough to plot the downfall of the most powerful person in the story, without ever having a bio break is something that remains the norm!!! Hero toilet pogalainu oru posta nu kekapdaathu. That alone is not the matter. Just wondering out loud, if not confirming to norms of the regular people an essential quality to become a hero? If a character is good looking on screen and is the designated hero of the story, he can do anything and more that a villain does and still come out clean as a whistle with all the blames going to villain. The clear cut demarcation of what is blood vs thakkaali chutney is never more hypocritical when it comes to character definition of heroes. Poor villains. They deserve a better deal!! I always used to wonder, was Joker the real "dark" knight in the movie. It all depends on where you land the quotes!

Hero toilet pogalai ? (hahahahahahhaha)

As for why heroes never sleep, the answer is very simple. They don't eat thayir sadam. QED !!

Blood vs Thakkali chutney is not a philosophical quandry that has occured to me thus far. I will need to consider this matter with deep thought.

Ode to the Nice Guys

This is a tribute to the nice guys. The nice guys that finish last, that never become more than friends, that endure hours of whining and bitching about what assholes guys are, while disproving the very point. This is dedicated to those guys who always provide a shoulder to lean on but restrain themselves to tentative hugs, those guys who hold open doors and give reassuring pats on the back and sit patiently outside the changing room at department stores. This is in honor of the guys that obligingly reiterate how cute/beautiful/smart/funny/sexy their female friends are at the appropriate moment, because they know most girls need that litany of support. This is in honor of the guys with open minds, with laid-back attitudes, with honest concern. This is in honor of the guys who respect a girl's every facet, from her privacy to her theology to her clothing style. This is for the guys who escort their drunk, bewildered female friends back from parties and never take advantage once they...

Padithathil pidithathu

Few authors thrill us to read more of their creations. At times its sheer luck that we might end up with the worse of their lot and might give up on them only to find many other good ones which we would've ignored based on first impression. James Rollins is one such author. My friend's sister introduced me to "Map of Bones" and told me that its in the same genre of "Davinci Code" and since i am a sucker for adventure series she recommended this one to me, with a warning that, at times this guy goes over the board like Ludlum in describing situations. With that warning in mind i began the book. I took my own sweet time to finish it but the book kept me interested. However many times i kept it down i always went for it again to know what happened next. In the end, i pretty much liked the story, though it was totally unbelievable. The story is about the bones of the Three wise men or Magi who visited Jesus when he was a kid. Their bones held a clue to a vast so...

Hearbeat - season 2 - review

What makes a drama series tick, in OTT, that too in Tamil? The question should've been pretty straight forward and not as difficult as it is for making a successful movie, for drama series are dime a dozen across scores of TV channels and none of them are found wanting for audience. The more the cry the merrier the TRP. In that context, the only challenge that OTT platforms might've had while streaming tamil series must've been to choose the path - either the well trodden and worn out cryathons aligning with Satellite channels or try for something genre specific like how they do across English and other foreign languages. This is where Heartbeat series in Hotstar finds the fine balance between being a soap oppaari (no pun intended) in tv and carving a niche OTT audience.  While the setup might've been familiar one for Hindi audience with so many series happening on hospital based storyline, i guess this is a first for tamil. The first season was more on establishing the...
