Of songs and meanings

Na. Muthukumar, is one of the favorite lyricists of many tamil film fans, who loved his creations even off screen as standalone presentations. Be it his poem collections or his song lyrics as a collection, most of them are rich in fantastic imaginations and sheer poetry that lasts longer and linger in your mind for much long. As many claim his best efforts, movie wise, was with Selvaragavan directed films and with Yuvan shankar raja as the music director. The trio worked magic on screen and churned out several chartbusters that were not just lilting melodies but quite rich in lyrical content as well. I happened to read about one such song which was my longtime favorite and when i read the reasoning behind the song and how it was constructed as a question-response kind of a word play i was astonished to say the least. It is one of the saddest songs in scripted in tamil movies ever and makes heart breaking viewing. But the sheer poetry behind that song made me write this post, which is a tribute not just to the lyricist but also to that fan who had posted about the same.

The song is "Ninaithu ninaithu paarthaal" from 7g rainbow colony. It comes in 2 versions, one sung by the hero and other by the heroine. Just like the meme "i was today day old" when i got to know about this, it could be yet another " idhaan un takka" moment for many who already knoew about this. So porutharuluga.

The male version is actually a list of questions or inconsolable rant by the hero, missing his lady love and the female version is her response from beyond.

He finally laments that he lives his life in the hope that she will appear one last time before him for which she responds that she is always present in him.

Unnul vaazhgiraen

Such lovely verses and so much of feelings and sentiments strewn all throughout. All this while i had been under the thought it was the same song sung by both male and female singers without even realizing the slight change in wordings that convey so much meaning!!! There is a famous adage that "art is long but life is short". The very reason why an art is immortal is sheerly because of the rasikas who elevate the work to an altogether different plane. As long as humanity has the sense of rasanai in them, there is still hope!! Thanks to that wonderful post by that person who has increased my respect for the lyricist and this song in particular, multi fold!

Lovely. This is a classic I had not heard. Will hear a few times. This carries the long tradition of lovely poetry and music in Tamil films.
