Nightmare on wall street:

"Wailing Wall" street
"Brick by Brick comes the wall street down"..

Possible headliners for mid day newspapers in US?? Could be.

The earth has shaken and the big t(h)ree has fallen. The dust is still settling down and god knows how many more are going to bite the bankruptcy bullet. Lehmann Brothers and Meryll lynch go the Bear Stearns way - towards extinction. While Meryll lynch might survive as an underdog of Bank of America, Bear Stearns being already gobbled up by Morgan Stanley many expected Lehmann Bro to ride out the storm, with the hope of Barkley's doing the rescue act this time, in vain. The same Lehmann firm was in news last year, for paying top bill (1 crore plus) for an IIM graduate sparking off debates in India.

Guess, after 7 years, its sep 11 all over again in US, only that the venue is different this time. Another biggie by the name AIG (American Insurers Group) is also reported tottering at the brink. Will the Feds do anything to save it is a question which would've answered by this time next week. Maybe US Fin market is becoming seasonal? They had a "Spring" time a while back and the moment republicans took over its "Autumn" and "Fall" season now!!

Meryll and Lehman were a surprise to me. AIG was a shock. just thinking about the investors who bought AIG'S shares a week ago.. It has fallen by more than 75%..

The impacts are very much visible in India. The original news was that ICICI had exposure in lehman and could suffer some loss. But news in some parts of tamilnadu was that ICICI is bankrupt and suddenly people started crowding up in front of ATMS.

well, these dramatic changes fuelled a lot of rumours and guesses from right left and centre. Layoffs, more banks feeling the pinch and what not, but then crowding up in front of icici to take ur money out...ahem...sometimes Indians do over do things! BTW, another pretty huge brand to have dissolved in an effort to stay afloat was HBOS, Halifax bank of scotland which was taken over by Lyods TSB. this happened in UK later in the historical week. Million dollar question though is, looking at what caused the meltdown at wall street, would this happen in India in near future? would we soon be have the sub prime looking down on us...Coz we too have mortgages and loans being given without much verifications and credit rating checks as of now. A slump in real estate / IT bubble burst is the thing that would perhaps leave us too at the middle of another crumble closer home.
Anyway, the events of the big week were pretty personal for me (bye bye Merrill!)...though expected.

BTW, AIG is safe, and 10 banks of wall street (Merrill and BOFA included) have contributed to a 70 bn dollar fund to save more instis and the market. Though AIG did not get much from it, it was saved by fed, this might cushion the fall for many. Likewise back home and world over, regulatory banking bodies have pumped monies into market to help it limp back...and it seems to be doing the trick. It would take time, but things will be back on track and we will be staring into the next boom, it has always been like that, one period of recession followed by golden times.

Ode to the Nice Guys

This is a tribute to the nice guys. The nice guys that finish last, that never become more than friends, that endure hours of whining and bitching about what assholes guys are, while disproving the very point. This is dedicated to those guys who always provide a shoulder to lean on but restrain themselves to tentative hugs, those guys who hold open doors and give reassuring pats on the back and sit patiently outside the changing room at department stores. This is in honor of the guys that obligingly reiterate how cute/beautiful/smart/funny/sexy their female friends are at the appropriate moment, because they know most girls need that litany of support. This is in honor of the guys with open minds, with laid-back attitudes, with honest concern. This is in honor of the guys who respect a girl's every facet, from her privacy to her theology to her clothing style. This is for the guys who escort their drunk, bewildered female friends back from parties and never take advantage once they...

Padithathil pidithathu

Few authors thrill us to read more of their creations. At times its sheer luck that we might end up with the worse of their lot and might give up on them only to find many other good ones which we would've ignored based on first impression. James Rollins is one such author. My friend's sister introduced me to "Map of Bones" and told me that its in the same genre of "Davinci Code" and since i am a sucker for adventure series she recommended this one to me, with a warning that, at times this guy goes over the board like Ludlum in describing situations. With that warning in mind i began the book. I took my own sweet time to finish it but the book kept me interested. However many times i kept it down i always went for it again to know what happened next. In the end, i pretty much liked the story, though it was totally unbelievable. The story is about the bones of the Three wise men or Magi who visited Jesus when he was a kid. Their bones held a clue to a vast so...

Hearbeat - season 2 - review

What makes a drama series tick, in OTT, that too in Tamil? The question should've been pretty straight forward and not as difficult as it is for making a successful movie, for drama series are dime a dozen across scores of TV channels and none of them are found wanting for audience. The more the cry the merrier the TRP. In that context, the only challenge that OTT platforms might've had while streaming tamil series must've been to choose the path - either the well trodden and worn out cryathons aligning with Satellite channels or try for something genre specific like how they do across English and other foreign languages. This is where Heartbeat series in Hotstar finds the fine balance between being a soap oppaari (no pun intended) in tv and carving a niche OTT audience.  While the setup might've been familiar one for Hindi audience with so many series happening on hospital based storyline, i guess this is a first for tamil. The first season was more on establishing the...
