War times

A while back junior was asking which countries were at war in the ongoing conflict. We were listing down the number of countries and the next inevitable question came in - why so many are at war. A we continued on that topic, i was wondering how many are actually not at war!!

Couple of decades back, Africa would always be in the news solely for war related topic. Like Weather, International news, Business, Sports, if there was a section for war in news, it would most probably about some African country were conflicting ethnic tribes would be hell bent on clearing out the other, some army coup, dictator being thrown out and getting replaced with another equally if not more bad one. Locally, it would be some unrest or stone pelting or occasional infiltration/ gun fight in Kashmir, that would be hogging the headlines. It would be followed by number of soldiers martyred or army causalities. But in recent times, the news seems to have slightly changed. Yes there are warring nations, be it Ukraine-Russia, Armenia-Azerbaijan, Israel - Gaza, Pak-Ind for a brief while, Pak-Af, and the more recent Israel/US vs Iran which has dragged in most of mid east nations unwittingly. But the news is no longer about army causalities but more of civilians!! Every day we get to read about hospitals being bombed, residential places being devastated, civilian infrastructure being targeted and very less about the actual people who are supposed to be players in the war - namely the army/air force and navy. Why the hell having a standing army who are sworn to serve their nation with their life, if need be, sitting in idle, while the select few play video games on the lives of the civilians whom they've sworn to protect!!

This new era of drone war fare has literally relegated the role of "foot on ground" warfare to backstage. It is the ease of use to push a button and tracking it to its target like video games with disc jockey has made the role of soldiers secondary and has brought in civilians into play. Despite tall claims of super accurate target and smart warfare, there is no guarantee as to where which one will fall, either intended or unintended or as part of shrapnel from shield!! It seems even more than the actual missiles, the shields end up causing as much damage in the form of debris from the defense and it all ends up on the heads of unknowing civilians, who ends up paying the brunt of hubris of a select few morons who have their butter fingers strongly stuck on decision making apparatus. There should be a rule that any country planning to fight against anyone else, should arrange a stage where the leaders of both nations should fight it out one on one and who ever wins should be declared the ruler of the other nation!! Might sound childish, but if you really think it through, but for the ego haggling of select few, there would've been no war in first place!! UNO (Unnecessary Needless Organization) with its remaining pieces of teeth or enamel, should consider opening one such arena in Switzerland, the supposedly neutral country of the world.

You raise an extremely important point - the targetting of civilian infrastructure and even civilians in wars. After the horrors of the Second World War, the Geneva Convention was laid down that regulated such things. Targeting of anything civilian is a war crime. However, following the Geneva Convention was largely voluntary on the premise that anybody violating it was likely to receive the same treatment and nobody wanted that. Yet, in recent wars, these have all been violated with impunity. Can you imagine the plight of being a civilian in any of the war zones today ?? Absolute horror.

What has the human race descended to. These were how wars were fought in ancient and medieval history - absolute annihilation of the losers in a war. We thought we had become a little more civilised in this century, but alas, the base instinct of man is still the same.

Good idea of one on one fights to settle disputes. In the red corner - Ali Khamenei. In the Blue corner Donald Trump. Let the fight begin !!

Timeline by Micheal crichton

Michael Crichton along with Arthur Hailey is my favorite author. It gives immense thrill to read their books and their storylines are full of insights on the industry or genre or the institution about which the premise may be based, almost like reading a subject matter book but interestingly written in simple language which can be followed by laymen. I remember reading this book sometime around my college first year or may be bit earlier around that time. It was obviously a hard copy and was shared with me by a school mate of mine, who was also the one who introduced me to Asimov. He gave me "Prelude to Foundation" that i read for almost an year. "Timeline" was intriguing and kept me interested sheerly by its concept of time travel and i was smitten by the thought process when i read it first. This time, co-incidentally, i was also watching the movie based on the same story in parallel and somehow both the book and the adaptation were disappointing! I can understand...

Best romantic dialogues..EVER

Love and Freedom of expression in times of Sena wud've been apt title for this post :) Thought i would watch MNIK and post its review to show my protest. Since i couldn't i settled for watching re-runs of the usual mushy movies which they show year after year in Star and HBO. I was waiting for Nottinghill, Harry met sally, Autumn in NY, Sweet November, You've got mail and Pretty woman. Surprisingly except for the last one, none of the other movies featured in any of the channels!!! Maybe the channel guys themselves got bored :D Anyways..these movies have become part and parcel of my movie watching gene that i've mugged up most of their dialogues by now :D Here are some for you to cherish and enjoy. Without googling..let me see how many of these you can identify and how many more you could add :) " I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out, I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich, I love that you get a little crinkle above your no...

This is not a once-in-a-life-time-never-before-told story sort of a movie. Inum solanumna..its so simple that, i can bet you there would be atleast one friend in your gang whose life story would match frame by frame with this one. The story is so simple..dialogues so natural..no major twists (Except for the ending..grrrrrrr). Apramum intha padathula pudikara mathiri enna iruku?? Well..to me..i felt the natural nature of the movie is its strength. No hype..over the top emotions..unwanted sentiments..everything is measured. Gautam menon even pokes fun at himself at some scenes. Its a simple tamil Hindu tenant boy, who is aspiring movie director, falling in love with Mallu christian landlord's gir...
