The Diplomat - drama series review

If i've to start this post as fast as how this series goes, then the first line would be the closing sentence!! Despite each episode running close to 45 mins, this is one of the fastest series i've binge watched ever!! The after effects of the series is more like aftermath of Deepavali. A day early, you would've had the rush of crackers bursting, fire and sound and lights and smoke and high on energy. The next day is more of a revelation with all those dusts and burnt papers flowing around the streets in waves, making you wonder are these the very things that were fun yesterday!! Like any racy book or movie or any ride in amusement park for that matter, the success of them all lies in not making the audience to think while the performance is on. When asked for the feedback, while still in the adrenaline rush, inevitably, every one will gush good about the same. But when they take a breath and start to recollect, they may wonder, what was all that fuss about!!This series is quite like that even though it has its own moments in abundance.

Its about a lady who is catapulted as the US ambassador for UK instead of her posting in Kabul. Her husband being a wily sly one from first scene, does his best into silently goading her into her new role. Secretly she is being prepped for taking over as Vice president as the incumbent one was about to get impeached. The lady goes about all bluster and takes issues head on, with every action of her shows her as more of a field agent than a diplomat. The speed with which she walks, this is possibly the fastest i've ever seen a character walk on screen, she would've burnt quite some calories everyday on the set!!! Though named Diplomat, diplomacy is hardly the thing that is dealt with in the series and it moves more like a spy thriller. There is one plot, of a British naval ship getting bombed, from where the series goes on for two seasons straight, with every single incident and event happening around it. With that one issues keeping every one from UK PM to US president occupied along with international relations in balance, how the measly ambassador manages to keep everyone on their toes and saves the day in the brink of time or pushes people to their wits end is the whole of the series. There is never a single dull moment and series rushes super fast into its season one finale and before you know it you are halfway into the next season!! All the characters look perfect fit for their roles and even though she comes only for the last 3 episodes of season 2, with a potential major role in the upcoming season, the lady who plays the VP is all regal and confident. Right from her posture to looks and the way she carries herself, everything about her is royal!! The main lead, the lady ambassador, brings out all her energy to her role and physically it must've literally taken her breath away!! In no other series i've ever seen heads of states being shown this dumber, impulsive and clownish. May be the makers wanted them to be closer to reality?

This series is already a blockbuster for Netflix and is slated for several awards, sheerly for the chemistry and the performances of the characters involved. There is never a dull moment and the twists that keep happening are organic with Iran being the perpetrator suspect, the needle then moving towards Russia, from then onto the host country England itself with its own PM being a suspect and then finally the involvement of US itself on the incident are all too pul[ fiction novel-ish yet intriguing. Looking forward to the next season.

Why is this series successful in the US, when the real life events happening in their politics is more interesting. They just have to watch TV or read the newspaper.

For that matter, why are you bingewatching this ?? You can follow our Indian politics - Tamil Nadu or Maharashtra or Bengal ..... take your pick :)
