Of violence and protests

There used to be a time when, news channels reported people protests in other countries, be it middle eastern or Latin American, the common footage would be that of a mob throwing stones from one side and shield carrying riot police in other side firing tear gases and water cannons. Broken shops, damaged vehicles, injured personnel and people are stock footage level commonalities across all those incidents. Very rarely such scenes used to happen in India, Kashmir being an exception. Not saying that our country is utopia where people are very happy or devoid of incidents. But such mob fury related ones were quite rare and few at the scale with which it happened on other side of the world. Nowadays, it has become so common that, it feels, as if such acts are ingrained on the minds of individuals as a valid response for any issue, irrespective of its scale and nature. In last couple of years at least, there has been so many such incidents be it for farmer issue, population registry, road expansion, exploratory needs, common exams, army recruiting and the list keeps increasing. As recent as this week, with the violent clashes over a kid’s death in a private school, where the mob has not just destroyed school property but also the certificates and other documents, branding a question mark on the future of more than 3500 students and scores of staff of that school. It feels as if, when such incidents happen people see it as a means of getting famous, having their 2 seconds of sun on the tv screen!! Nothing else defines such barbarism or mindless mayhem. This nation has been born out of protests and it has shown the world a form of protest which abhorred violence. In what happens to be its 75th year of independence witnessing such acts of violence for every issue, makes one wonder how far we’ve moved away from the set path that defined our country. Be it political parties, enemy nations creating mischief, selfish and narcissistic media, those who are hell bent on shaming the nation and similar others with shared motive, are all shamelessly in synch destroying the general order. As silly as a building being sealed resulted in a critical junction on a metro city being blockaded for general public during peak hours, without any notice, throwing the normal life in disarray. Not just that. Such sporadic and sudden acts of violence are so scary that, it makes the general public dread to come out of their house!! Institution that was once considered safe is being portrayed as a mystery mansion where not just your child’s education but very own existence is lottery!! With so many suicides and unnatural deaths being reported alongside harassment of every evil kind being subjected to, kids these days have a much more bigger challenge of surviving schooling and coming out unharmed, leave alone the burden of books and studies!! Imagine the perspective with which those kids will be seeing the society and when they enter adult phase, all those pent up rage and pain are bound to come out in disruptive ways. Future looks really worrisome and scary!!

Actually, violence , suddenly erupting, has always been a fact of life in India. It may seem as if it has increased recently, but I think every decade for all of the time India has been independent, has seen these incidents.

Poverty, disregard for decorum and public behaviour and often cruel handed police have been sparks. What has changed however, in my view, is that we have all become perpetually angry because we consume media that is intended to provoke anger. So it needs a smaller spark to set off the fire of violence. We would all do well to chill a bit, not consume news media constantly and stop getting angry at the drop of a hat.

Having said that, violence of any sort needs a bit of organising. Just outrage alone is not enough. There, we seem to have exceptional talent of those who wish to organise action of those who feel angry. If only they could channelise their talent positively.

We need a massive invetment in, and overhaul of police and judiciary. Both are at least 50 years behind the times. Any decent society needs strength in both these institutions.

Rommmmmmmmmba naaala pending. Atlast managed to see it. Intha padatha pathi all my friends where raving about so much that apdi enna thaan irukungara curiosityla i started reading the book first. Not sure which one came first, but somehow i felt the book was more stronger in emotions than the movie. The heroine is more sad, more bubbly, more lonely, more enthusiastic in the book than compared to the movie. How much ever i love Hillary Swank, i still would bet Meg Ryan would've done wonders to this character. I felt it was tailor made for her. Coming to the story. A cute pair of hubby (Gerald "leonoidas" Butler of "300" fame) and wife(Hillary "Million$baby" Swank)- Who fight a lot and love each other a lot more. Nadichavanga perlaam podrathukulaye hubby dies. Aayirathil oruvan

Long awaited movie. The expectations went up manifold after watching the trailors. Selvaraghavan is one of the few directors whose movies people flock to see just for his skill alone. This movie was no less. Right from the title, it sounded a magnum opus. Five minutes into the movie, you can feel that.."wow..this looks different". One thing, it didnt seem your normal tamil movie at all. More like an Indiana jones movie. I can boldly put my neck on the block and say that the first half of the movie, is something you would've never seen in entire tamil cinema history. It has THE BEST adventure sequence to have been visualised EVER in a tamil movie. I was simply amazed at that stone henge sequence and the nataraja shadow. It was simply..WOW. That one single scene has so many inbuilt sequences and logic that it was awesome. The cholas creating the hurdle in such a way that you've to be in the shadow of God (Nataraja, Chola's favourite deity) else get swallowed by bott...
