The golden era

At some stage, every one of us would have, will be, using this phrase - "andha kaalathula". That is your graduation ceremony into geriatry , password for being labelled perusu , valedictory speech of being vayasaaidchu, kinder way towards being/becoming kezham. Well. 

I saw a speech by late Mr.Nellai kannan about Kannadasan. He was speaking about the depth of philosophy on his thathuva songs and how his command over his language helped him churn out so many immortal creations. One such song, he just mentioned a para that stayed with me.. haunted me to be precise.

"Iravin kanneer panithuli enbaar

Mugilin kanner mazhaiyena solvaar

Iyarkkai azhudhaal ulagam sirikkum

Manidhan azhudhaal iyarkkai sirikkum"

Even while reading the lines you can't resist hearing Chandrababu's voice and the immense sadness it leaves in your heart from the movie "kavalai illaadha manidhan". I've never seen the movie but this song made me feel so sad everytime I heard it that I never went beyond the first stanza. But the way Kannan explained the lyrics made me fall in love with that song. From there began the great song quest which took me all the way across the next several decades, covering Phil(osophy) collins to Faith hill to Celine Dion to Eric clapton to Bryan adams to George Benson to Ronan keating and finally settling on " When you say nothing at all" from Notting hill finishing it off with "Say a little prayer for you".

Adhennamo therila late 80's to late 90's seems to have witnessed a great many number of talented singers across the world, across genres, who were more than one hit wonders. I feel so relaxed listening to them and infact if I can't play them out loud just reading the lyrics itself will play the song with orchestration in my head. Feels like, If not for music we might have as well remained as monkeys!!
