Kudos to the curative team of Netflix, who rarely let the audience down when it comes to picking engaging story lines. Very rarely we get to see real life stories or book adaptations based on real life situations or events getting due justice on screen in India. Black Warrant ticks that mark in most aspects. It is a series based on few incidents on Tihar jail. Each of those incidents being landmark in their own and if i am not mistaken, it is adapted from the book written by the then jailor of Tihar. To me the surprise package of the list was "Billa and Ranga" - the title made famous by blockbuster movies starring Rajini. Apparently they both were gruesome killers who had killed a teenage boy and girl mercilessly and had been sentenced to death by hanging. The way the jail authorities go about preparing for hanging and how one of them ends up surviving the first attempt only for the action to be completed by force by the jailer team tells not just the human aspect behind those events but the toll it takes on the people involved. Be it the hangman or the jail SP or the wardens and most importantly the accused, that particular episodes covers all angles in as interesting and detailed manner possible. Another episode being how 180 people, arrested and take into custody, escape in broad daylight under the very nose of the authorities makes for a quirky viewing. Charles Sobraj(that guy who plays this role is awesome. He is so effortless and efficient that it almost feels like candid camera on the real life character of the criminal) and his hold on the jail authorities couldn't be shown more blatantly. The kind of violence and shady dealings that happen in Tihar have all been done and dusted across several movies now that they almost sound common place. One glaring and definite thing which the censor board (if at all such exists for OTT) is the language used in the series. With tamil dubbing, they have taken the usage of foul language to a whole new level. Makes one shudder at thinking of how others will pick the cue on this and continue down the line. It is not just "A" but extreme vulgar language that could make a sailor blush!! Overall an engaging series and possibly the best one of 2025 already from Netflix!
