Drishyam 2 – movie review
When “Drishyam” movie was launched, little did that director would’ve known that his movie would be such a raging hit and would get recreated in so many other languages. The storyline was such a fancy one that it became a decent hit across every language it was made. Leaving aside the controversy that the script could’ve been an “inspired” version of the Keigo Higashino superhit novel “Devotion of suspect X”, the storyline was nevertheless a superb adaptation for Indian setup, especially in Malayalam. The sequel starts right where the first part ended and the best part being majority of the cast from the first part being present, giving it a genuine sense of continuation. Another interesting aspect about the sequel being, rather than being a ‘spiritual” sequel, it is an actual set of events that happens in the lives of all those people who were part of the previous one. The script is exceptionally well researched and weaves through a web of issues and possibilities that might’ve happened after the first part gets over in such a fantastic setup, with the body being hidden on the very place where the police station was being built. There is an accidental eye witness, who having returned from jail wants to cash in on the prize money, there are some very novel and interesting set of new characters who makes you sit up and take notice when the reveal happens and above everything, every single scene from the pre interval block gets neatly tied down in the post interval block, culminating in an explosive twist of a climax. The essence of the hero doing everything in his capacity to put his family before everything is retained in this part as well and I can stick my neck out and say that it is even better than the original, where except for the climatic twist it was a decent script at best. Here there are so many plots and sub plots strewn casually throughout the first half that makes the viewer distracted and even bored at some places wondering why they are unnecessarily kept to prolong the run time. But when they fall neatly in place and form the full picture, the grand reveal and the final twist were literally mind blowing. Agreed that, it is still not aesthetically pure from technicalities perspectives, where in people have already found so many logical loop holes from how the procedures are made in real world. But leaving those cosmetic misses apart, this is a brilliant attempt at story telling and probably the closest one gets to witness a mystery novel on screen with all the essence of a book thrown in right measure.
Drishyam – 2 is a pleasure watch for thriller genre audience.
