Dea(r)th of stories
I recently saw a movie on Prime, which i felt had an interesting premise. Something that used to be staple theme in fairy tales and mandhiravaadhi stories of the past. Only difference being that, those tales were meant for kids and never went into the kind of detailing that these one presented with or explored!! For instance, the movie "Double occupancy", dealt with the case of a baby being girl in the mornings and becoming boy after 6PM in the evening. In fact they are presented as 2 different individuals who never knew what happens in the other form of their life!! The story heads into a situation where in the boyfriend of the girl form first discovers this duo-limbo situation and slowly the girl friend of the boy form gets to know about it as well. The movie has so much adult content that beyond a point, it felt as if the point of making the same person boy and girl was for exploiting those specific situations and what a waste it was of a potential gold mine of situations. The ending was as cinematic as possible and convinient at best, with the boy form getting killed and manages to safeguard the girl form. And within few weeks time came another movie 'Ram leela" which dealt with the same theme of girl turning into guy in the evenings!! Must've been a clear case of story stealing i guess, but somehow the director had manages to mash up a diference by making the girl and her families as aliens who had been stuck on earth and continue to thrive as both male and female in their respective timelines. Unlike the former movie, this one has its share of melodrama (!!) scenes as well and eventually has a convinient cinmatic ending with the couple giving birth to a kid with similar characteristics. The third movie in the list being the latest version of "Scary movie". For long, scary movie franchise used to maintain a decent standard when it comes to spoofing famous hit movies and scary movie 2 and 3 used to be quite funny. But the latest one shows how far the real world has become incoherently bad and how even real incidents rival spoof for content!! Throughout the movie, they were desperately trying to churn familiar setups to drag a smile at the least and it was irritating at best. Some of the situations involving, people getting addicted to video games while bingeing on psychedelic drugs, cops reaction towards black people and other instagram driven stuff, felt like watching news section rather than a spoof movie.
I read somewhere that there are only a dozen or so original stories in the whole world while rest are all rehash of the same. Even historically and culturally as well, there are several similarities to the most famous stories of the world, which all involve a famously devastating flood and a rescue boat and how a messaiah came from above and helped humanity. The theme may be same, but the stories were as original as they can be. But with recent movies, be it in tamil, hindi or any language for that matter, they are only seeming to pander to a specific audience in the name of being politically correct or outright incorrigible for the sake of being funny. Where have all the romantic comedies and comics gone!!! I would rewatch the movies from couple of decades back anytime rather than these bland and dull stuff that they pander in the name of comedies!!
