Musical decade
I can say with all confidence that when it comes to cine music, my generation(!!) was the blessed one, for they were able to witness magic made live by great music directors of previous generations who were masters of melody, like MSV, KV, supposedly newbie, like Ilayaraja who successfully managed to bridge classical with western blending it with local dappankuthu, and his famed "assistant" ARR, who literally swayed the nation to his techno tunes and his peers who came after him like Harris Jayaraj, if you add Deva, Shankar Ganesh, and several other small players who had their moments in the sun, these giants literally ruled the movie music world and most of them are still active, even though their best of days are long behind them.
The taste in music is one clear parameter that defines ageing is my strong belief. The more one dislikes the music of the next generation, the faster they are becoming old is "Gils law". My dad never really liked Ilayaraja for he rarely had a chance to check out his melody music and more often than not witnessed only the dappanguthu version of IR, which for a person who grew in the melodious world of MSV, felt nothing less than sacrilege. When ARR came in, my friends used to tell me that the more they dislike the song on first hearing, the bigger it will become a hit in near future!!! And surprisingly that logic worked most of the time!! The street where i grew up during my college days was a cultural potpourri to say the least. The demography was a weird mix, with the street being named after a muslim personality (till today i don't know the person after whom it was named is a sad story in itself), having a mosque very close to the entrance of the street and a church that formed the other end of the street, with a pillayar kovil bang in the mid section!!! Deva and SA Rajkumar were the aasthaana music directors of the street and come any festival or event - ambedkar had 3 to 4 birthday celebrations in that street basis which group collected sufficient money and when. Luckily they mentioned his correct DOB most of the time, despite celebrating several months later!! - and when they used to play all those kuthu songs which were the claim to fame of Deva, it felt more of a nuisance than music. When the same songs are being performed on talent shows with judges going ga-ga over the compositions, makes me wonder where they talking about the same song that was once chastised across the board for having brought down the level of the genre!!
The less said about Ani, SaNA and co the better for they will be the last batch of cine musicians who are currently composing the requiem for the entire industry!! There are hardly any lyrics and the same tune is being played in increasing decibels across every movie! Having successfully outgrown the hatred and settled into unshakeable belief that this is one urupdaatha case, i can now conclude that, from personality i've qualified to be termed perusu-naalu tea !!!
